A while back, I completed the basic training in IFS, which taught me that I have numerous parts or sub-personalities that aim to protect, manage, or sometimes act in a disruptive manner, yet they all work diligently to safeguard me or the self. Throughout the healing process, many of us encounter internal conflicts, contradictory emotions, and thoughts, which can sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing. Our minds become even more intricate when we grapple with unresolved trauma and sorrow. I believe that IFS presents a groundbreaking approach to comprehending and resolving these inner intricacies, enabling us to deeply understand all aspects of ourselves so that we can overcome trauma.


Understanding IFS


The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is a unique therapeutic approach that acknowledges the complexity of the human psyche, recognizing the presence of distinct parts or sub-personalities within us. What sets IFS apart is its emphasis on not immediately challenging our thoughts and instead advocating for a compassionate exploration of unwanted symptoms without labeling these parts as pathological. We all carry wounded parts burdened with emotions, including generational trauma, while protective parts work diligently to shield us from further harm based on past experiences. Through promoting self-compassion, kindness, and empowerment, IFS highlights the belief that each of us possesses a core "self" or "self-energy" with inherent resilience for healing. This method deepens our understanding of ourselves in a meaningful way.
