Finding the right therapist

Mental health is health and that is why it is so important to find the right therapist for you. There are some key things to remember when looking for a therapist.

  1. Ask yourself what you need help with? During the intake appointment, a therapist would ask this question so it is good to clarify your goals. What are the presenting problems? Depression, relationship issue, stress management? Many platforms offer you to narrow down your specific issue so they can match you with the right therapist.

  2. It can be helpful to know about different therapy approaches. Many therapists practice an eclectic therapy but it is good to know the differences between CBT, DBT, ACT, Psychodynamics..and during the intake appointment, you can ask your therapist.

  3. Obviously, money will always ben an issue for many people. If using insurance is important to you, go to the insurance provider directory. If you have out of network benefits, use that to reduce the costs of therapy sessions.

  4. Read the reviews on zocdoc, google review, or you can ask your friends and family for suggestions.

  5. Find the therapist that specializes in your primary issue. You can schedule a 15 minutes free phone consultation if therapist offers that. If you are a trauma survivor, you want to find a therapist that has extensive experiences working with trauma survivors. You will need to read the therapist's bio and ask a questions if they have worked with trauma survivors?

  6. Are you a good fit?: What did your gut feeling say about therapist. Do you feel safe talking to this therapist? Does she have experience in your areas of struggles?

  7. It is normal to schedule several 15 minute consultation and many therapists offer that for free so they can answer any questions you have.

  8. Finally, are they in network with your insurance plan? Is session fee sustainable for you?
